Smithville Goes Wild
One of the most exciting things about the summer is the opportunity students have to truly enjoy the outdoors. They can explore fields and streams, while meeting all kinds of interesting creatures along the way. On Tuesday, June 15, College Street Public School will help students and the community gain an appreciation of nature, while sharing important lessons on how they can support a healthy and diverse ecosystem.
That day, students in College Street’s eco-club will guide their fellow classmates on an adventure tour that highlights native plants and animals within their local area. At the end of the tour, those students will be invited to become the teachers as they guide parents through the various displays and activities. “Our goal here is to show students and their families the value of biodiversity and equip them with the knowledge and tools to become active citizens in protecting wild spaces in Smithville,” says teacher Tara Darling.
“Families will also be given resources to help transform their own backyard into a space that is welcoming to native species,” adds teacher Christa McBlain.
The event will feature interactive displays from the College Street Eco-Club and Niagara College , a native plant sale and an introduction to some of the engaging technologies that are helping students to learn about the environment. Using GPS technology, families can learn how to Geocache. Geocaching is an interactive, high tech game that challenges people to use a GPS to find new places and experience nature.
