Redcoat Receives Terry Fox Award
Governor Simcoe Secondary School student Jenna Cooper never stops working to make the world a better place. For her efforts, the Grade 12 student is being recognized as one of the recipients of the 2010 Terry Fox Humanitarian Award.
Typically presented to only 20 people across the country, the award recognizes the kindness, compassion and generosity of young Canadians, and encourages them to continue in their humanitarian work while attending college or university in Canada. Along with the award, Jenna will receive a scholarship to support her University studies over the next four years. Jenna will begin working towards her degree in Social Work this fall at Lakehead University’s Orillia Campus.
“The selection committee could not have found a more deserving recipient of this presitigous award,” says Governor Simcoe Principal Rick Karr. “Jenna has devoted countless hours to both school and community initiatives. She is a true school leader and exemplifies the character traits we encourage our students to demonstrate on a daily basis.”
In the community, Jenna has given considerable time to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. She has assisted with fundraisers, special events and has helped deliver programs for children and teens. Currently, she is a member of the MS Society’s Young Adult Advisory Group where she contributes to the development of national programs designed to improve the lives of people living with MS.
Jenna is also a member of the Youth Advisory Committee for the Powerhouse Project, an initiative raising awareness of young people living with a disabled family member. She has attended several conferences and is involved in program development and logo design.
During her time at school, Jenna has also spent a great deal of time working with younger students, through tutoring and helping with the delivery of programs designed to encourage physical fitness and healthy living.
Athletically, Jenna is the student organizer of the cheerleading team. She plans practices, fundraisers and helps to organize special events for the team. She also competed as a member of the school’s rowing team for the past three years.
