DSBN ACADEMY OPEN HOUSE

Join us at DSBN Academy on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for our annual Open House! This event gives potential students and families a chance to meet the staff, check out the school, and learn more about our school culture and community.

WHAT IS DSBN ACADEMY?

We are a very unique school in Niagara. Why? Because DSBN Academy is a school that is specially designed to support and empower students to become the first in their family to graduate from college or university. Our main goal is to best prepare students for the world beyond high school, by helping them to attend, and succeed at, college and university. 

We are a Grade 6-12 public school, meaning that all students join us in Grade 6 and stay with us until they graduate at the high school level. The length of time spent at DSBN Academy is a key part for how we prepare students to transition from public school to post-secondary training and education. 

DSBN Academy is for any First-Generation student who is committed to the goal of achieving a post-secondary education. Students and staff are committed to the belief that, with hard work, any student can achieve their dreams.

WHY ARE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN DSBN ACADEMY?

Many, many reasons! Here are some of the best reasons we think you’ll love being a student at DSBN Academy:

• We are dedicated to helping every one of our students become the first in their family to graduate from college or university
• Students come from all 12 municipalities across the Niagara Region! Transportation is provided to the school 
• We have a mandatory after-school program called ENCORE where you can expand your skillset beyond the classroom. There are tons of opportunities to choose from, including: Mixed Sports, Chess, Karate, Dance, Zumba, Coding, Mad Science, Board Games, Photography, Choir, Canvas Painting, Crochet, Crafts, Podcasting, Baking, Debating, Drama, and – if you can believe it – many more!
• The decisions we make are rooted in removing barriers and creating real opportunities for all students
• At DSBN Academy, we understand everyone is unique and may face life challenges along the way, and we are here to support you

HOW CAN I BECOME A STUDENT AT DSBN ACADEMY?

Because we are unique school, we have a unique enrollment process. DSBN Academy accepts students through a formal application process, and there are requirements a student must meet to join the school.

Here are the requirements for students to apply to DSBN Academy:

• will be the first in their family to graduate from a college or university
  • Important: if a student’s sibling has attended a post-secondary institution, but their parent(s) and/or guardian(s) have not, then the student is still considered a first generation student and can apply to DSBN Academy!
• will enroll in Grade 6, 7, or 8 for a September start (please note: Grade 6 is the optimal time to enroll. Spaces are limited for a Grade 7 or 8 start)
• is committed to attending DSBN Academy up until Grade 12
• must live within the Niagara Region
• is willing to attend a school location that may be outside their community (transportation is provided for these students)
• understands there is a mandatory after-school program called ENCORE. As a result, the student is committed to slightly longer school days from Grade 6-12
