The Board Action Plan (BAP) on Indigenous Education is the DSBN’s annual plan for supporting the achievement and well-being of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students and strengthening learning about Indigenous histories, cultures, perspectives and contributions for all students and educators. Developed with guidance from the Indigenous Education Council and informed by local priorities and relationships, the plan identifies the initiatives supported through dedicated Ministry of Education funding.
All Board Action Plan initiatives are organized into four funding categories:
- Supporting Students
- Supporting Educators
- Engagement and Awareness Building
- Supporting Indigenous Education Planning
Supporting Students
This category funds programs and supports that help First Nations, Inuit and Métis students feel connected, supported and successful at school. Initiatives may strengthen academic achievement, well-being, identity, belonging, student voice and leadership, while helping students access culturally responsive learning, community connections and pathways beyond secondary school. This category also supports learning opportunities for all students to deepen their understanding through embedded Indigenous content across many subject areas (e.g. Indigenous knowledges, treaties, and sovereignty), and to explore their roles and responsibilities in advancing reconciliation.
Supporting Educators
This category helps educators build the knowledge, confidence and resources needed to respectfully include authentic First Nations, Inuit and Métis histories, cultures, perspectives, contributions and contemporary realities in their teaching. Initiatives may include professional learning, curriculum development, Indigenous-authored resources and guidance from Indigenous partners.
Engagement and Awareness Building
This category supports meaningful relationships with Indigenous students, families, the Indigenous Education Council and community partners. Initiatives create opportunities for families, students, staff and the broader community to learn together, share perspectives, celebrate Indigenous cultures and achievements, and help ensure local Indigenous voices inform the work of the board.
Supporting Indigenous Education Planning
This category supports the planning, coordination and review of Indigenous education across the DSBN. Working with the Indigenous Education Council, the board uses student, family and community input, along with information about participation, achievement and well-being, to identify local priorities, guide decisions, monitor progress and strengthen future initiatives. This work also helps identify and remove barriers that may limit Indigenous students’ access, participation, achievement, well-being and sense of belonging.
