DSBN Students Gear Up for Provincial Competitions

Skills MedalistsHigh school students in Niagara will soon be taking their talents to Waterloo for the Ontario Technological Skills Competitions (OTSC) in May. Students earned the ability to compete in Waterloo by winning gold medals at the annual DSBN Technological Skills Challenges.

Last week, the DSBN honoured all students who medaled at the 15th annual Board-wide challenges at a banquet event held at Club Italia in Niagara Falls. “It was certainly an inspirational night watching our students be recognized for their outstanding efforts. Many of these students have been working diligently learning their crafts and honing their skills since September,” said Jill Russell, DSBN Technology Consultant.

“The wonderful thing about the Skills Challenges is they showcase the numerous pathways to success available to our technology students,” says Colleen Fast, Specialist High Skills Majors Facilitator.

Students in the 2D Animation, TV and Video, Welding, Culinary, Individual Carpentry and Small Powered Equipment challenges will all have to take part in a further qualifying competition April 20 at Niagara College in order to continue on to the Ontario challenges.

Students moving on to the OTSC will join over 1,900 of their peers from across the province to take part in more than 60 skilled trades challenges. This is the 24th annual province-wide competition. From the OTSC, students have the opportunity to progress to the Skills Canada National Competition in Vancouver this June.
