Crossley Student Captures Gold with an Electric Performance at National Skills Competition  

E.L. Crossley student Jon Louws is certainly amped up after capturing top honours at the recently held Skills Canada Competitions in Vancouver, British Columbia. Louws earned the national gold medal after an outstanding performance in the Electrical Installation challenge.

As part of the Specialist High Skills Major Energy program at Crossley, Louws had the opportunity to hone his skills through many hands on opportunities and workplace experiences. The long hours spent dedicated to his schooling paid off as the judges complimented Jon on his technical expertise and the quality of workmanship.

Joining Jon on the national stage in Vancouver was Stamford Collegiate’s Joann Vu, who earned her ticket out west by excelling in the provincial skills competitions. Joann demonstrated a great deal of passion and creativity in the hairstyling competition and finished fourth in all of Canada.

DSBN Consultant for Technology and Experiential Learning Jill Russell congratulated “both students and their teachers, Marc Demers and Liz DiGaetano for their achievements, but also the hard work and dedication that earned them a place at the national competition.”

The Skills Canada competition was held June 6-7 at BC Place in Vancouver. Over 500 students from across the country took part in over 40 trade and technology challenges.

DSBN students have been extremely successful at the Canada-wide competitions over the past few years, with students winning gold in the 2012 TV/Video Production challenge, bronze in the 2012 Hairstyling challenge and 2011 gold in Welding.
