Kindergarten Students Young at Art

The world is a big, wondrous place that Kindergarten students are just beginning to explore. Beginning on Tuesday, March 25, four and five year old students at the DSBN will share their perspectives at the “Young at Art” show on display at the DSBN Education Centre in St. Catharines.

The show is the first of its kind at the DSBN and will feature over 250 works of art. “Being involved in the arts at this young age helps students to develop their imagination and find new ways to express themselves,” says Gerda Klassen, DSBN Arts Consultant. “While students at this age may not be able to write about their feelings, they can create pictures and use colour to express their emotions. This also helps students to develop their fine motor skills.”

The show will feature a technological twist. Visitors to the show will be able to stand in front of some of the artwork and, using their smartphone, iPad or other device, be able to watch a short video of the young artist talking about their piece.

The official opening will be held on Tuesday, with some young artists in attendance and a jazz combo from Port Colborne High School. Brock University’s Peter Vietgen will provide opening remarks and their will be opportunities for those in attendance to view the artwork on display.
