DSBN Mourns the Passing of Longtime Trustee and Educator, Alex Bradnam

Apr 17, 2025

It is with deep sadness that the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN) announces the passing of Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees, Alex Bradnam. A long-time educator and advocate for students and their families, Bradnam leaves behind a legacy of steadfast service.

Alex Bradnam’s contributions to public education spanned over 40 years, beginning in 1976 when he joined the board as an elementary teacher. He went on to serve as Vice-Principal and Principal, leading Grand Avenue and E.W. Farr Public Schools with care, compassion and a strong belief in every child’s potential.

Following his retirement, Alex continued his lifelong commitment to education through public service. He was first elected to the DSBN Board of Trustees in 2010, representing the communities of St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Re-elected in 2018 and again in 2022, Alex was serving his third term as Trustee and fifth consecutive year as Vice-Chair of the Board.

In addition to his role as Vice-Chair, Alex served on numerous DSBN committees. He was a long-standing Chair of the Policy Committee and a committed member and long-time supporter of both the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) and Parent Involvement Committee.

Known for his tireless advocacy of students with special education needs, Alex was also a loyal supporter of DSBN staff, from frontline educators to senior leaders. Always quick to express his appreciation, Alex understood and often acknowledged the vital role staff play in supporting student success and well-being. His respect for the entire DSBN team was heartfelt and enduring.

“Alex was more than a colleague - he was a mentor, a champion of students and a dear friend,” shared Sue Barnett, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Over more than a decade of working together closely, we built a strong partnership rooted in our shared commitment to education and, most of all, students. Along the way, that partnership grew into a genuine and lasting friendship. We will deeply miss Alex, his unwavering dedication, his wisdom and the care he brought to everything he did.”

“I met Alex early in my career with DSBN and consider myself fortunate to have worked alongside him, first as a teacher, then principal and, most recently, as Director of Education,” said Kelly Pisek. “A valued member of our team, Alex’s voice helped guide the board with thoughtfulness and integrity. He leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, and a deep love of learning. His passing is an immeasurable loss to the DSBN and the Niagara community. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the honour of knowing and working alongside him.”

In honour of Trustee Bradnam, all flags at DSBN schools and the Education Centre will be flown at half-mast until further notice.
