Head’s Up: Former WWE Wrestler to Address DSBN Concussion Summit 

Christopher Nowinski is renowned for his work to raise awareness about the dangers of sports related head injuries. It’s an issue he has an intensely personal connection to. Back in 2002, the Harvard graduate was working to establish himself as one of professional wrestling’s most promising young stars when his career was prematurely cut short by post-concussion symptoms. Next week, Nowinski will lend his expertise to the DSBN’s second annual International Summit on Concussions in Niagara Falls.

“Sadly, children and youth account for one-third of all traumatic brain injuries,” said Kevin Graham, DSBN Special Initiatives Facilitator. “This is an important safety issue that schools take very seriously. The learning that takes place at this conference will help reduce the number of concussions suffered by young people and support the recovery of those who are injured.”

Taking place from October 24 – 25, the summit will bring together educators, coaches and respected leaders in the field of concussion research, diagnosis and treatment. The conference will provide valuable guidance and insight into developing appropriate concussion guidelines and policies, safety measures designed to reduce the risk for student athletes and strategies to assist students’ return to class following an injury.

The summit will also include keynote addresses by Dr. Charles Tator, Chair of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, Dr. Blaine Hoshizaki, founder of the Neurotrauma Impact Research Laboratory at the University of Ottawa and Dr. Scott Delaney, Assistant Professor at McGill University and Team Physician for the Montreal Alouettes.
