Sipping
Fuel Key to Supermileage Challenge
For students
in the Specialist High Skills Majors Transportation program, it’s all about
doing more with less.
Since
September, students from six DSBN secondary schools have been busy creating
vehicles designed to maximize fuel economy and distance they can travel. On
Saturday, May 30, at 11:00 a.m., the students will gather at the Seaway Mall to
put their creations to the test. The first ever Super Mileage Competition will
determine which vehicle can go the furthest on just 250 mL of gas.
“Each team
has worked hard this year to design, build and problem solve the construction
of a vehicle from top to bottom,” said Kevin Graham, Team Leader, Experiential
and Technological Education. “Each team had to adhere to numerous limitations
in order to design a vehicle built for distance.”
Each team was
provided with the same motor to work with, and from there had to design and
develop all other aspects of the vehicle. “This allowed the students a lot of
creativity in their work,” said Roy Smith, DSBN Technology Consultant.
Participating
schools include Port Colborne High School, South Lincoln High School, St.
Catharines Collegiate, Stamford Collegiate, Thorold, Eastdale and Westlane
Secondary Schools.
The rain date for the
event is May 31.
