DSBN
Awards Greater Fort Erie Secondary Construction Contract
Students in
Fort Erie are one step closer to seeing shovels in the ground at the future
Greater Fort Erie Secondary site. On Tuesday, October 13, DSBN Trustees voted
to award the near $23 million dollar construction contract to Struct-Con
Construction, the lowest bidder.
“We are
pleased to reach another milestone in the process to deliver a new high school
for students in the Greater Fort Erie area,” said Sue Barnett, Chair of Board.
“Struct-Con is a respected firm with expertise in this area, having recently
completed a $22 million dollar school project for the Toronto District School
Board.” The contract conforms to the Broader Public Sector directives.
“We are
especially encouraged that Struct-Con will be using some local sub-contractors and
suppliers in the construction, supporting Niagara’s workers and economy,” said Warren
Hoshizaki, DSBN Director of Education.
Located on a scenic
15 acre plot of land on Garrison Road across from the Town Hall, Greater Fort
Erie Secondary School will feature 33 classrooms including science labs, music,
arts business and technology rooms. It will also include a cafeteria, a kitchen
for its award winning food programs, a double gym, a fitness centre and an
artificial turf athletic field. The new school will cover 116,600 square feet.
The total
budget for the project is $28,405,253. This includes the cost of land as well
as the $3 million dollar Fort Erie Centre for the Arts, which will be financed
through fundraising efforts. The DSBN and Town of Fort Erie have each contributed
$500,000 to the theatre project.
