Forestview Branches Out with New Addition

Jan 24, 2020

January 24, 2020 – Niagara Falls. Work to accommodate the Forestview community will begin shortly. On January 23, 2020, the Ontario Government announced approval to proceed with the $5.6 million-dollar project to add 8 new classrooms, additional childcare space and expand the Niagara Falls school’s gym.

“The population at Forestview has experienced significant growth over the years. We’re always happy to welcome new friends to the Falcon community and this addition will help ensure we’re able to continue meeting the needs of all students,” said Michael St. John, Superintendent of Education.

One of the most exciting aspects of the project is the inclusion of a double-gym in the government’s approval. “With more than 700 students, Forestview badly needed this additional space. An addition to the gym itself will provide students with more opportunities to engage in physical activity. We appreciate the government’s willingness to partner with us and approve this project,” said Sue Barnett, Chair of the Board.

DSBN Director of Education Warren Hoshizaki credited school staff for creating an inviting, and successful school. He also noted that, “Staff in charge of facilities and capital put forth a strong business case for the project to the Ministry of Education”.

When the school first opened its doors in September 2008, the gym accommodated the over 380 students who were enrolled. Since that time, the population of the school has nearly doubled, making an addition to the gymnasium a much-needed feature to ensure all students receive their daily physical activity. The addition is expected to fit the needs of the school long term; projections indicate enrolment will be stable at just over 700 students for the foreseeable future.

Work on the Forestview expansion is expected to begin in the spring; it will take approximately one-year to complete. To ensure safety while work progresses on the second floor of the building, students will continue their learning in portable units.
