DSBN Statement on the Mass Shooting in Buffalo, New York

May 16, 2022

We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the targeted, racially-motivated mass shooting that occurred at a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Buffalo, New York, this weekend. At least 10 innocent lives were tragically taken, and 3 others are reported injured. Most of the victims were Black. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the grieving families, the people of Buffalo, the Black community, and those who are feeling impacted by this horrific event.

Any and all forms of racism, discrimination, and acts of hatred and violence have no place at the DSBN, and we acknowledge this type of tragic event may leave members of the Niagara and DSBN communities feeling traumatized, unsafe, vulnerable, and fearful; especially Black and racialized families.

DSBN's Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism team and the Mental Health and Well-Being team are providing resources to support staff, students and families in our schools and classrooms. If you are in need of support, we strongly encourage you to connect with your school.
