Family Guide to Creed Accommodations

At the DSBN, we believe that working together with students, families, and communities helps create schools where everyone feels welcomed, included, and respected. We are committed to making sure that all students can learn in environments that support their religious and spiritual beliefs.

The Family Guide: Recognizing & Respecting Creed Diversity was created to help families understand how they can request support for their child’s religious or creed-based needs at school. There is also a companion guide for school staff, so families and schools can work together to support each student.

We want every family to feel comfortable speaking with their child’s school. If your child has a religious or spiritual belief that requires a specific accommodation, please reach out to the school principal or your child’s teacher to start the conversation. These discussions help staff learn more about your family's beliefs and how they can best support your child.

Examples of Accommodations Families Can Ask For:

  • Time and space for daily prayers or spiritual practices
  • Permission to miss school for important creed-based holidays or observances
  • Accommodations to gym activities, music, or art classes that align with your beliefs
  • Modifications to dress code (e.g., wearing a hijab, turban, etc.)
  • Dietary considerations during school events or in food-related lessons

Our goal is to build a school system where every student feels safe, valued, and supported in who they are and what they believe.
