The DSBN’s fourth annual equity conference, Rise Up!: Students Leading the Change, held on December 10, 2025, was another powerful and inspiring gathering of student leaders from across the board. Secondary students from all DSBN schools came together to examine issues of equity, belonging, and justice, and to strengthen their capacity to lead change within their school communities.
With 240 students, supported by staff advisors and support staff from all 16 secondary schools, the conference created meaningful opportunities for students to connect, collaborate, and learn from one another. Through thoughtfully facilitated small-group sessions, students explored topics such as identity and belonging, self-advocacy, anti-racism, Indigenous perspectives, 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion, mental well-being, and the role of student voice in creating more inclusive and affirming schools.
At the heart of Rise Up was the belief that students are essential partners in shaping school cultures where everyone feels seen, valued, and respected. The conference provided space not only for learning and reflection, but also for relationship-building and collective action. By centering student voice and lived experience, Rise Up continued to affirm that young people have the agency, insight, and leadership to challenge inequities and contribute to more just and inclusive communities – both within DSBN and beyond.
